Flo Verhulst (Amsterdam, 1999) creates photographs because they want them to matter. Through self-portraiture, they explore the intricate layers of their own identity, using the camera as both a tool of expression and a medium for personal healing.
Their work is rooted in the themes of vulnerability, healing, and self-growth, with a focus on exploring and representing queer and trans identities, offering a visual dialogue between their inner world and external realities. Each image is a reflection of their lived experiences, capturing moments of introspection, emotion, and transformation.
Verhulst's creative process is intuitive, often using an analog medium-format camera. This approach allows them to slow down, embrace imperfections, and create space for spontaneity and magic. Their work often merges the personal and the political, exploring the contradictions of the medium and addressing topics like generational trauma, healing, and the collective consciousness. Through their self-portraits, Verhulst aims to create a space where viewers can reflect on their own identities, find representation, and engage in meaningful dialogue that leads to deeper understanding and healing.
